The Lord of the Rings (Trilogy)

The Lord of the Rings (Trilogy) is Peter Jackson's adaptation of J.R.R Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. The script, though by no means an exact copy of the books, does often contain many of the same elements.

An attempt will be made here to keep quotations in order chronologically, and to mark those which are quoted directly from the books, particularly if the quotation is said out of its canon context or by another character.

The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)

  • Galadriel: The world is changed. I feel it in the water. I feel it in the earth. I smell it in the air. Much that once was, is lost, for none now live who remember it.
    • Part of these lines were originally said by Treebeard in The Return of the King; here they are the openning lines of the Prologue.

  • Gandalf: BILBO BAGGINS. Do not take me for some conjuror of cheap tricks. His face softens.
I am not trying to rob you, I'm trying to help you.

  • Saruman to Gandalf: Your love of the halflings' leaf has clearly slowed your mind.

  • Gandalf: Tell me, friend, when did Saruman the Wise abandon reason for madness?

  • Arwen: I choose a mortal life.

  • Boromir: Gondor has no king. Gondor needs no king.

  • Frodo: I will take it. I will take the Ring to Mordor...though I do not know the way.

  • Elrond: Nine companions, so be it. You shall be the Fellowship of the Ring.
Pippin: Great. Where are we going?
    • In the book, the Fellowship is actually not announced immediately following the Council of Elrond.

  • Gimli: Nobody tosses a dwarf.

  • Frodo: It's a pity Bilbo didn't kill him when he had the chance.
Gandalf: Pity? It was pity that stayed Bilbo's hand. Many that live deserve death. Some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them, Frodo? Do not be too eager to deal out death in judgment. Even the very wise cannot see all ends. My heart tells me that Gollum has some part to play yet, for good or ill before this is over. The pity of Bilbo may rule the fate of many.

  • Frodo: I wish the ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.
Gandalf: So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world Frodo, besides the will of evil. Bilbo was meant to find the Ring. In which case, you were also meant to have it. And that is an encouraging thought.
    • Spoken here in Moria, the previous two quotations were originally from the same conversation much earlier in the book.

  • Gandalf to Pippin: Fool of a Took! Throw yourself in next time, and rid us of your stupidity.
    • One of the classic lines from the book, in a more dramatic form.

  • Gandalf:You cannot pass. I am a servant of the secret fire, wielder of the flame of Anor. The dark fire will not avail you, flame of Udun. Go back to the Shadow. YOU SHALL NOT PASS.
    • Spoken to the Balrog of Moria, flame of Anor may refer to his position as Ringbearer of Narya.

  • Gandalf: Fly, you fools.

  • Galadriel: In place of the Dark Lord you will set up a queen. And I shall not be dark, but beautiful and terrible as the morning and the night! Fair as the sea and the sun and the snow upon the mountain! Dreadful as the storm and the lightning! Stronger than the foundations of the earth. All shall love me and despair!" She stops. I pass the test. I will diminish, and go into the West, and remain Galadriel.

  • Aragorn: I would have gone with you to the end, into the very fires of Mordor.

  • Sam: I made a promise, Mr Frodo. A promise. Don't you leave him Samwise Gamgee. And I don't mean to. I don't mean to.

  • Aragorn: I do not know what strength is in my blood, but I swear to you I will not let the White City fall, nor our people fail.
Boromir: Our people, our people. I would have followed you to the end... my brother... my captain... my king .
Aragorn: Be at peace Son of Gondor.

The Two Towers (2002)

  • "Tree? I am no tree! I am an Ent." - Treebeard

  • I come back to you now, at the turn of the tide - Gandalf

  • "So it begins." - King Theoden

  • "The Battle for Middle Earth is beginning." - Gandalf

  • "Toss me, toss me, just don't tell the elf." - Gimli

  • "Where is the Horse and the Rider?
Where is the Horn that was blowing?
They have passed like Rain on the Mountains,
    Like Wind in the Meadows.
The Days have gone down in the West,
    Behind the Hills,
    Into Shadow.
How did it come to this?" - King Theoden

  • "My business is with Isengard tonight. With rock and stone!" - Treebeard

The Return of the King (2003)

  • Sméagol: Give us that Déagol, my love.
    Déagol: Why?
    Sméagol: Because . . . it's my birthday . . . and I wants it.

  • "Do you think that the eyes of the White Tower are blind? I have seen more than you know. With your right hand you would use me as a shield against Mordor, while with your left hand you conspire to supplant me. Oh yes... I know who rides with Theoden of Rohan. Word has reached me of this Aragorn, Son of Arathorn, and I tell you now, I will not bow to this Ranger from the North, last of a ragged house long bereft of lordship!" - Denethor

  • Elrond: I looked into your future and I saw death.
Arwen: But there is also life. You saw there was a child! You saw my son!
Elrond: That future is almost gone.
Arwen: But it is not lost.
    Elrond: Nothing is certain.
Arwen: Some things are certain. If I leave him now, I will regret it forever. It is time.

  • From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring,
Renewed shall be blade that was broken,
The crownless again shall be king.

  • Elrond: The man who can wield the power of this sword can summon to him an army more deadly than any that walks this earth. Put aside the Ranger. Become who you were born to be!
    • In the book, the sword Anduril is reforged at the Fellowship's leaving from Rivendell.

  • Gimli: Well, this is a thing unheard of. An Elf will go underground where a Dwarf dare not! Ah, I'd never hear the end of it!

  • Gimli: Certain death. Small chance of success. What are we waiting for?

  • Sam: Come on, Mister Frodo. I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you! Come on!

  • Aragorn: This day does not belong to one man but to all. Let us together rebuild this world that we may share in the days of peace.
