A magazine is a place where goods are stored, particularly a room or building where ammunition is stored. It also refers to a spring-loaded container for the ammunition for a single firearm; see semi-automatic firearm.

By analogy with the above, a magazine is a periodical publication containing a variety of articles on various subjects.

Magazines are typically published weekly, twice-monthly or monthly, with a date on the cover that is in advance of the date it is actually published. They are often printed in colour on coated paper.
Magazines usually have articles on popular topics of interest to the general public and are written at the reading level of most of the population. A periodical publication that has scholarly articles for academics written in more technical language is usually called a "journal".
Many weekend newspapers now incorporate 'magazine sections' with a magazine-like format.
The oldest magazine still in publication is The Scots Magazine which was originally published in 1739 and is still going strong.
